During my visit to these shantytowns, the local residents told me many interesting things about the past. Combined with some literary works, Tong He Li by Chengzhi Wang and Along the Flower Street by Nei Lu, I used the name of San Yi Li -the name of an alley in Shanghai, and wrote six stories set in this area to tell a story of civilian life in 1980s Shanghai in the form of cartoon painting. I asked the people living in Shanghai who are the same age as I am to read these stories in Shanghai dialect. Dialects are both a way of integrating into a region and a way for us to look back the past.
